A center equipped with the latest technology has been opened to support students' startup projects.
A meeting was held at the Türkiye-Azerbaijan University (TAU) with female employees of the university on the occasion of March 8 - International Women's Day.
At the meeting, TAU Acting Rector Vilayat Valiyev, Vice-Rector Mehmet Shimshir, and Chairwoman of the Trade Union Committee Elvin Bakhtiyarli congratulated the female employees on March 8 - International Women's Day and conveyed their best wishes.
Later, the TAU Rectorate and the Trade Union Committee presented gifts to female employees on the occasion of the holiday.
A delegation led by the Minister of Science and Education Emin Emrullayev is on a visit to Istanbul to attend the 4th meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University and meet with the rectors of higher education institutions of the Republic of Turkey, including the Chairman of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) of the Republic of Turkey, Erol Özvar, and the rectors of Hacettepe University, Istanbul Technical University (ITU), and Middle East Technical University (METU), which participate in the activities of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University from Turkey.
As part of the visit, the delegation led by the Minister of Science and Education Emin Emrullayev attended the 4th meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University on February 27.
During the visit, the delegation met with the Chairman of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) of the Republic of Turkey, Erol Özvar, as well as the Rector of Marmara University of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kurt, and the Rector of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Hasan Mandal.
During the meeting, a close acquaintance was made with the material and technical base and laboratories of the leading faculties of the mentioned universities, and cooperation opportunities with a number of Azerbaijani universities, including Karabakh University, were discussed.
In addition, a meeting was also held with Azerbaijani students studying for doctoral studies in Turkey, and opportunities for the students' future academic and scientific activities were discussed.
It should be noted that further meetings with university rectors are planned within the framework of the visit, which will last until March 2.
A meeting was held at Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) with the Azerbaijani representation of the Independent Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (MUSIAD) and employees of the Gebze Organized Industrial Zone (GOSB) technopark. The meeting was attended by AzTU Rector Vilayat Valiyev, Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) Vice-Rector Mehmet Simshir, and AzTU representatives.
Rector Vilayat Valiyev welcomed the guests and provided information about the university's activities, engineering and technology initiatives.
Then, Rashad Jabirli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MUSIAD Azerbaijan, spoke about the organization's activities in our country and its contributions to the development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. TAU Vice-Rector Mehmet Simshir shared the university's activities in the field of education and innovation with the guests.
During the meeting, cooperation opportunities with both universities were discussed.
Ahmet Köse, Director of the "Bilim Baku" Center and the official representative of "TEKNOFEST" in Azerbaijan, met with Vilayat Valiyev, Rector of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU). The meeting was also attended by Mehmet Şimşir, Vice-Rector of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU), as well as other representatives from AzTU.
During the discussion, the parties
exchanged views on expanding cooperation with AzTU and TAU.
Following the meeting, an infosession for
AzTU and TAU students was conducted by Ahmet Köse, Director of the "Bilim
Baku" Center and official representative of "TEKNOFEST" in
Azerbaijan.
The session opened with remarks by Subhan
Namazov, AzTU Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation, who noted the students'
enthusiasm in preparing for "TEKNOFEST" each year. Emphasizing the
significance of the competition, the Vice-Rector highlighted the new
opportunities it creates for students.
Subsequently, Ahmet Köse delivered a
comprehensive presentation regarding "TEKNOFEST-2025."
The event concluded with a Q&A session
where students' questions were addressed.
Turkey-Azerbaijan University marks 1 year since its establishment.
Today marks 1 year since the establishment of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU), which began its operations in partnership with Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Hacettepe University and Azerbaijan Technical University. The “Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Council of Higher Education of the Republic of Turkey on the Establishment of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU)” was signed in Ankara on February 19, 2024. On this occasion, Mehmet Şimşir, Vice-Rector of Turkey-Azerbaijan University, gave an interview to AZERTAC about the purpose and educational process of TAU.
We present the interview.
- What are the distinguishing features of Turkey-Azerbaijan University in the Azerbaijani education system?
- Turkey-Azerbaijan University is a university established by the common consensus of the heads of state of both countries in order to bring the field of education to the highest level, as in other fields. Turkey-Azerbaijan University has a very different structure from other universities as a model. Turkey-Azerbaijan University performs the function of an “umbrella university”. Thus, this higher education institution was established in partnership with 3 universities in Turkey (Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Hacettepe University) and one university in Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan Technical University). In this sense, we are essentially a joint university. “Umbrella university” means that the specialties taught in Turkish universities are taught here as well. For example, the program of the Computer Engineering Faculty of Middle East Technical University is applied here as well. The program of the Industrial Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University is taught in the same manner in the industrial engineering specialty. The classes of the Food Engineering Faculty of Hacettepe University are taught to students in the food engineering specialty of TAU. Teachers from Turkey teach here. Just as the teachers of the Computer Engineering Faculty of Middle East Technical University teach in Turkey, they also teach in Azerbaijan. Similarly, the teachers of the Industrial Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University come here and give lectures. Professors of the Food Engineering Faculty of Hacettepe University also come here to give lectures. Therefore, in this respect, the Turkey-Azerbaijan University model is being implemented for the first time in the world. This is our difference from other universities. That is, we bring the best universities of Turkey to Azerbaijan and unite them in the Turkey-Azerbaijan University.
- What can you say about the educational process at TAU?
- Education here is 100 percent in English. We must accept that in order for the quality of education to be high, education should be in English, as a language accepted worldwide. Our students are admitted according to the examination rules of the State Examination Center of Azerbaijan. Then they take a level exam in English. If they score the required score, they start studying from the first year. Students who do not succeed in the level exam continue with preparatory classes in English. This preparatory program lasts for one year. It starts in the fall semester and ends in the spring semester. Then, students who are tested in the English language proficiency exam and successfully pass that exam continue to the first year. With the exception of the preparatory course, our education is four years. Currently, there are first-year students studying in the computer engineering specialty. We also have a first year in the food engineering specialty. But the first year in the industrial engineering specialty has not been opened. Our students who are admitted to that specialty are in the preparatory course.
- What other specialties are planned to be opened at the Turkey-Azerbaijan University?
- The currently existing specialties are computer engineering, industrial engineering and food engineering. These specialties are opened in accordance with the decisions of our Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is headed by the Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev from Azerbaijan. The Chairman of the Council of Higher Education Erol Özvar from Turkey. We submit our proposals to the Board of Trustees. Their decisions are determined as a result of discussions. Therefore, it is a bit early to talk about what other specialties will be opened at the Turkey-Azerbaijan University.
- A student visit to Turkey was organized in November. Will such visits continue?
- As you know, the COP29 event was held in Azerbaijan in November. We actually considered it an opportunity. Because education in Azerbaijan was conducted in an online format. We said that we should take our students to Turkey and visit Hacettepe University, Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University. Let them get acquainted with the teachers there. Let the students get acquainted with the young people studying in Turkey and communicate. My wish is that if the conditions arise, we should take our students admitted to this university to Turkey every year.
- Will there be any changes in the admission procedures of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University?
Currently, admission to the Turkey-Azerbaijan University is carried out according to the rules of the State Examination Center. Last year, we set the base scores for computer engineers as 500 points, and for industrial and food engineers as 450 points. However, all of our admitted students scored very high. The passing score for computer engineering was 641. This is much higher than the base score we set - 500. The passing score in industrial engineering was 544, and in food engineering it was 453. It is obvious that educated students choose us. They trust the education system of our university and us. This shows that they trust the education system of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University, which was created from the brotherhood of the two states. We are trying to be worthy of them. TAU will be an international university in the future. Consistent steps are being taken in this direction.
A meeting was held at the Azerbaijan Metrology Institute (AzMI) under the State Service for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Supervision with the Head of the National Soil Safety Institute (UZGE), Associate Professor Gültekin Coşkun, operating in the technopark of Sivas Cumhuriyet University, Turkey.
The meeting was attended by the rector of Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) Vilayat Valiyev, the vice-rector of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) Mehmet Şimşir, as well as representatives of the Azerbaijan Standardization Institute (AZSTAND).
During the meeting, information was provided on the AzMI's areas of activity, service areas, measurement and calibration capabilities, existing calibration and verification laboratories, including newly established reference laboratories.
Then, the head of UZGE Gültekin Coşkun spoke about the development of applied engineering and safety standards, and spoke about the methods and equipment used to measure slip frequency on indoor floors in the public and private sectors, as well as the international standards used during measurements.
Within the framework of the meeting, discussions were held on the application of European and Turkish standards on pedestrian infrastructure safety: EN 16165 “Determination of slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces - Assessment methods”, TS 13882 “Classification rules for pedestrian surfaces - General requirements and assessment methods”, EN 14231:2003 Test methods for natural stones - Determination of slip resistance with a mathematical dancer”, EN 13036-4:2011 “Properties of road and airfield surfaces - Test methods - Part 4: Method for measuring slip resistance/slipperiness of surfaces - Test method with a mathematical dancer”.
In addition, the possibility of students studying at AzTU and TAU conducting scientific research using the laboratories of AzMI, as well as the development of new projects in the field of metrology and the expansion of cooperation in this field were discussed.
Finally, mutual cooperation between the parties, including the application of international experience in the relevant field in our country, was considered.
A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU), Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) and the National Institute of Ground Safety of Turkey (UZGE). The cooperation includes joint activities in the field of scientific research, technology transfer, metrology, standardization and establishment of testing laboratories. According to the memorandum, the parties will cooperate in the implementation of joint scientific projects, publication of articles in international scientific journals, and application of innovative solutions with industry.
At the same time, trainings will be held for AzTU and TAU students by UZGE specialists, and practical experience opportunities will be created in laboratories. The parties will work together through Technology Transfer Offices to develop startups and strengthen the innovation ecosystem.
Staff members and high-achieving students of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) have been awarded in celebration of February 2, Azerbaijani Youth Day.
At the event, organized under the
initiative of the TAU Rectorate, the Trade Union Committee, and the Student
Trade Union Committee, distinguished staff members and students were presented
with honorary certificates and awards in recognition of their contributions and
academic excellence during the semester.
Assoc. Prof. Gültekin Coşkun, Head of the UZGE - National Ground Safety Institute, which operates within the technopark of Sivas Cumhuriyet University in Turkey, was a guest at Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU). During the visit, she met with AzTU Rector Vilayat Valiyev. Representatives from both Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) and AzTU also participated in the meeting.
Providing information about the
institute's activities, Gültekin Coşkun stated that the institution provides
high-quality testing and certification services in the fields of metrology and
floor safety. In addition, the institute conducts research on the friction
coefficients of surfaces, including helicopter landing pads and various types
of flooring materials. She noted that establishing collaboration with AzTU and
TAU in these areas is a priority for the institute.
Rector Vilayat Valiyev emphasized the
importance of joint activities between AzTU, TAU, and the institute, suggesting
that implementing a pilot project in the initial phase would be highly
appropriate.

The delegation included TAU Vice-Rector
Prof. Mehmet Şimşir, Head of the Food Engineering Program Prof. Umran Uygun,
Head of the Department of Machine Design and Industrial Technologies at
Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) Prof. Isa Khalilov, and Prof. Vural
Gökmen from the Department of Food Engineering at Hacettepe University.
During the meeting, the guests were
provided with detailed information regarding the Institute's areas of activity.
It was noted that to ensure food safety and protect public health in the
country, the Institute operates specialized laboratories focused on food
safety, complex research, as well as plant and animal health.
It was emphasized that these laboratories
conduct examinations on the safety and quality indicators of various food
products. Furthermore, the guests were informed about the development of the
laboratory system in the country, as well as the progress and achievements in
modernizing the material and technical infrastructure. The discussion also
covered the close and effective cooperation established with international
organizations to enhance the theoretical and practical skills of the personnel
working in AFSI laboratories. The achievements attained in international
proficiency testing were highlighted.
At the meeting, it was also emphasized
that there is a necessity to expand cooperation between the two institutions,
particularly regarding the exchange of experience and other relevant matters;
existing opportunities were reviewed, and proposals were put forward.
Following the meeting, the TAU delegation
toured the AFSI laboratories to learn about their operational principles. They
visited the rooms where laboratory tests are conducted, observed the testing
process, and examined the instruments and equipment. Additionally, they were
introduced to the laboratory examination methods used for determining the
safety and quality indicators of food products of plant and animal origin, and
held discussions on matters of mutual interest.

The delegation also included Prof. Isa Khalilov, Head of the Department of Machine Design and Industrial Technologies at Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU).
The delegation was first briefed on the
center's operations. Subsequently, during a meeting with the Director of the
center, Emil Ahmadov, and his staff, the parties discussed potential areas for
future cooperation.
In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the tragic events of January 20, the leadership, faculty, and students of the Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) and the Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU) visited the Alley of Martyrs.
The university communities paid tribute to the memory of the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, laying carnations at their gravesites
The winter examination session has successfully concluded at
Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU).
Examinations for first-year undergraduate students were
administered in accordance with the assessment regulations of the respective
partner institutions—namely, Middle East Technical University (METU), Istanbul
Technical University (ITU), and Hacettepe University—based on the specific
engineering disciplines (Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Food
Engineering).
Concurrently, students enrolled in the English preparatory
program were evaluated solely on their English language proficiency.
It is worth noting that the current student body at TAU
comprises 83 students.

During his official visit to Turkey, Prof. Vilayat Valiyev,
Acting Rector of Turkey-Azerbaijan University (TAU), held a meeting with Prof.
Ahmet Hamdi Topal, Rector of Kastamonu University.
The meeting provided a platform for discussions focused on
establishing and deepening scientific research collaboration between the two
institutions. Furthermore, the participants explored prospects for implementing
joint academic projects and scholarly initiatives.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a cooperation protocol
between Turkey-Azerbaijan University and Kastamonu University. In addition to
fostering various academic ties, the agreement encompasses the implementation
of student and faculty exchange programs, as well as the organization of joint
cultural events.
The university leaders expressed their mutual commitment to
taking concrete steps toward strengthening educational ties between Azerbaijan
and Turkey.
Kastamonu University Rector Ahmet Hamdi Topal emphasized that
Turkey-Azerbaijan cooperation in higher education, grounded in the principle of
"One nation, two states," remains among the institution's highest
priorities. Prof. Vilayat Valiyev also underscored the deep-rooted ties of
friendship and brotherhood between the two nations.
